Not everyone can take a kitchen remodel and the associated financial costs lightly. If you are like Stephanie and me, we consider purchases of this size thoroughly. Let’s walk through a typical kitchen that we design, the financial aspect of it, and how you can frame it to determine if it is the right decision for you.
For example, let's say that it would likely cost about $100,000 if doing kitchen a remodel. Each remodel depends on existing conditions and final material selections. However, for the sake of the example, let's say that this is what a custom kitchen design would typically run. We do cheaper and more expensive designs than this, but you can get an idea and scale the numbers appropriately.
Currently, financing a kitchen remodel can be done at about 3.25% if you refinance your house with enough equity. Assuming you have 25 years left on your mortgage that would mean this increased $100,000 would add an additional $653/month to your mortgage. If you just received a big raise, it’s possible this is nothing, but for most people, it’s probably a decent hit to their disposable income and worth considering further.
